The Maruti Alto has been India’s largest selling car for years now with monthly sales consistently exceeding 20,000 units. A blend of bomb proof reliability, affordability, high fuel economy, a no-nonsense design and Maruti’s tremendous reach in sales and service across the length and breadth of India have been instrumental in the Maruti Alto’s continued success. However, all that could change in the coming months as a brash new upstart called the Hyundai Eon is all set to take the Indian entry level small car market by storm.

Today, we have with us a leaked brochure of the Hyundai Eon and from what we’re seeing, the Maruti Alto F8D as well as the K10 could have one hell of a fight on hand if Hyundai India manages to get the pricing of the Eon just right. With many indicators poiting to a INR 2.5 Lakh entry level price tag for the Eon, it could very well be the fact that the Eon could finally take on the Alto, in Maruti’s bread and butter segment. The Hyundai Eon comes with an curvy exterior design inspired by Hyundai’s Fluidic design philosophy that is much more appealing than that of the aging Maruti Alto.

Also, the interiors seem top notch, at least from the images and this is another area where the Hyundai Eon trumps the bare bones interiors of the Alto. Thirdly, the Eon also is more fuel efficient than the Alto, with an ARAI certified 21.1 KMPL fuel economy number. Fourthly, the Eon 814cc three cylinder petrol engine produce 55 Bhp of peak power and 76.5 Nm of pea torque, numbers which are significantly higher than that of the Alto by almost 15%. On paper at least, the Eon ups the ante in the entry level small car segment as the car will sit just below the Hyundai Santro Xing when it comes to pricing.

The only area where Hyundai India lags behind Maruti is in the sales and service outlets in India’s hinterland. Maruti’s three decade long run in the Indian market has ensured that it remains a major force with the highest number of sales and service outlets in the country. Hyundai however has aggressively expanded into smaller towns through standalone dealerships that will sell only its entry level cars like the Eon and the Santro Xing. When it comes down to the wire, the crucial sales and service angle will finally decide which manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki or Hyundai will hold the upper hand. The battle begins on October 13th, 2011, when the Eon will be launched in India!
